Tudor Beasts Coins of the Royal Mint

Tudor Beasts Münzen

Following the success of the gold and silver coins of the Queens Beasts series, the Royal Mint is releasing a new collection in 2021. The Queens Beasts series reflects the more than 800-year-old dynastic history of the monarchy, while the Tudor Beasts series focuses on the Tudor dynasty, which held the English throne from 1485 to 1603. The Tudor Beasts are produced as gold coins in the sizes 1 ounce and 1/4 ounce and as silver coins in the sizes 2 ounce and 10 ounce. The ten statues depict Tudor’s story of King Henry VIII and his marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour. The statues are made up of heraldic animals, each holding a shield. The entire Tudor series was designed by British surrealist artist and coin designer David Lawrence. All gold coins in the series are minted in 999.9 fine gold.

The Tudor Beats Gold Coins – What is a Tudor?

The Tudor Beasts series is a collection that will delight gold investors, collectors and lovers of British history. The Tudor dynasty originated in Wales. The period in question is considered one of the most glorious periods in English history. Henry VII created a centralized authority and Henry VIII laid the foundation for a strong monarchy.

Henry VIII adopted mythical creatures to symbolize his family tree. At Hampton Court Palace, 10 symbols of this family tree were carved on the bridge over the moat. These 10 statues served to strengthen the legitimacy of his position on the throne and to emphasize the glorious lineage and power of the Tudor dynasty.

What Tudor Beast motifs are there?

Over 400 years ago, Henry VIII commissioned the sculpture of 10 heraldic animals. They are located at the main entrance of Hampton Court Palace and are said to represent the lineage of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. One of the tasks of the beasts was to wear various shields with symbols, the so-called badges.

The Royal Mint honors the symbols of the Tudor Dynasty, one of the most powerful dynasties in the country, with The Royal Tudor Beasts collection. The Tudor Beasts series includes 10 motifs of the so-called beasts. These motives are as follows:

1. Tudor Beasts Seymour Panther:

The Tudor Beasts Seymour Panther represents the Tudor history and lineage of King Henry VIII and his marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour. The heraldic animal has the tail of a lion and the claws of an eagle and is depicted with fire coming from its mouth and ears.

2. Tudor Beasts – The Lion of England:

In the second design of the Tudor series, the Royal Mint highlights the image of the Lion of England. The English lion has been a symbol of royal heraldry since the dawn of heraldry. The lion represents British courage, strength, honour and pride.

3. Tudor Beasts – The Greyhound of Richmond:

The royal family has preferred dogs as pets for centuries. The greyhound, adopted by Edward 3 as a heraldic symbol, symbolizes loyalty, honor and holiness. Henry VIII paid special attention to the Richmond Greyhound. The Richmond Greyhound became a heraldic emblem adopted by both the Lancastrians and the Tudors.

4. Tudor Beasts – The Yale of Beaufort:

The Yale list, the Yale of Beaufort, which has already been featured in the Queens Beasts series, is presented in a special design for the Tudor Beasts Gold series. Yale is a legendary figure from European mythology. It symbolizes elegance, defense and determination. Lady Margaret, the mother of Henry VII, inherited the symbol of the Beaufort dynasty.

5. Tudor Beasts – The Tudor Dragon:

The Tudor dragon was used by all Tudor monarchs as a symbol in honour of their glorious Welsh heritage. The figure of the Tudor dragon was mainly used by Owen Tudor, the great-grandfather of Henry VIII. According to ancient sources, the Tudor dragon had a red head, back and wings.

6. Tudor Beasts – The Seymour Unicorn:

The Seymours were an English noble family of Norman origin. Sir John Seymour (1474-1536) became well known at the court of Henry VII and later his son King Henry VIII. The unicorn is a mythical figure that was already known by the ancient Greeks.

7. Tudor Beasts – The Royal Dragon:

Similar in shape and design to the Tudor Dragon. The royal dragon became an important symbol for the House of Tudor and thus of the Tudor dynasty, which came to power after defeating the House of York at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

8. Tudor Beasts – The Queen’s Lion:

The lion is a traditional royal and heraldic symbol that represents courage and strength. The Queen’s Lion wears the badge of Jane Seymour. The phoenix on the badge refers to the king’s love and devotion to Jane. It symbolizes love and rebirth and shows that she has accepted the badge.

9. Tudor Beasts – The Black Bull of Clarence:

Henry VII was married to Elizabeth of York. To show the unity of these two great dynasties, the figure of the bull was used by Henry VII. The Tudor shield was created by Henry VII to symbolize the union of the House of York and the House of Lancaster.

10. Tudor Beasts – The Queen’s Panther:

The queen’s panther holds a shield with the joint coats of arms of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. The coat of arms represents the union of Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour.

Features of the Tudor Beast coin series

The first coin in the Tudor Beast series from 2021 depicts the Tudor Beasts Seymour Panther, a wild animal that shoots flames out of its mouth and wears the Seymour wings. In 2022, the second coin in the series appeared, the iconic Lion of England, which has long been a symbol of courage, strength and national pride. Also in 2022, the Yale of Beaufort was minted as the third coin in the Tudor Beast series. All coins were designed by the artist David Lawrence of the Royal Mint.

Within a period of 5 years from 2021, the first minting date of the series, all 10 motifs will be produced and delivered to investors and collectors. The obverse of the entire series features a fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was created by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint in 2015. The portrait is accompanied by the inscription “ELIZABETH II. D.G REG F.D.” and an inscription indicating the face value of the coin. From 2023, the portrait of King Charles III will appear on every new coin from the Royal Mint. It was designed by the well-known artist Martin Jennings.
