Kangaroo Gold Coins

Kangaroo Goldmünze

History of the Australian Kangaroo gold coins of the Perth Mint

The Kangaroo gold coins were minted by the Perth Mint, which is recognized worldwide as one of the leading manufacturers of gold and silver bars. Although it produces both coins and bars, the mint is better known for its impressive commemorative coins with eye-catching motifs. The Perth Mint has been responsible for the production of Australian gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion coins since 1986. Among the Mint’s most popular coins are the Kangaroo Perth Mint gold coins.

First minted in 1986, the Australian Kangaroo gold coin is officially known as the “Australian Gold Nugget”. The first coin designs between 1986 and 1989 originally featured images of natural Australian gold nuggets. In 1989, the Perth Mint issued a proof edition of the Australian Gold Nugget that featured a more internationally recognizable symbol of Australia, the Australian kangaroo. The design of the new coin featured a relief of a kangaroo surrounded by sunlight. In 1989, it was nicknamed Kangaroo Coins. To date, the Perth Mint has issued variants of these coins in the sizes 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg Kangaroo gold coin.

Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coins

The origin of the Kangaroo gold coin lies in a coin known as the Australian gold nugget. These gold coins, which were first issued in 1986, featured the image of a gold nugget on the reverse. In 1989, the reverse of this coin was changed to depict the continent’s popular kangaroo. After the introduction of the kangaroo motif into the coin program, the Perth Mint began to follow another popular convention used in other gold coin programs: rotating designs. Every year, the Perth Mint issues a Kangaroo gold coin made of .9999 pure gold with an all-new motif on the reverse of the coin. The motif of the Kangaroo gold coin remains the same, but the kangaroos are depicted in their natural habitat. However, these motifs change every year. Various artists and engravers from the Perth Mint contribute to the design of the coins.

Design of the Australian Kangaroo gold coins

All Kangaroo gold coins from the Perth Mint, regardless of size, series or version, have the same obverse. Ian Rank-Broadley’s iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right profile and the inscription “Australia” appear on the obverse of all coins along with the face value of the coin.

The Perth Mint annually issues Kangaroo Nugget weighing 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce. The face value of each Kangaroo gold coin is in Australian Dollars (AUD). The 1 ounce coin has a face value of $100 (AUD), and each Kangaroo gold coin with a fraction of the weight has a corresponding value. These include denominations of $50 (1/2 ounce), $25 (1/4 ounce), $10 (1/10 ounce), and $5 (1/20 ounce).

Kangaroo gold coins from the Perth Mint were also occasionally produced in larger weights such as 2 ounces, 10 ounces and 1 kilogram (32.15 ounces). The year 2014 was the 25th anniversary of Kangaroo gold coins. This year’s coinage used the original kangaroo motif on the reverse of the 1989 coin that began the series. This red kangaroo was the focus of engravings around the words “Australian Kangaroo 1 oz 9999 Gold” and “1989-2014”.

There is also the series of Australian Mini Roo Coins, which were first minted in 2010 in just 1/2 gram and .9999 pure gold. Only one kangaroo is depicted on the Mini Roo coins. On the reverse is a simple engraving along with the mint mark “P”. The Mini Roo coins have a face value of $2 (AUD).

Why Kangaroo Gold Coins of the Perth Min?

The Perth Mint is known for its depictions of the continent’s stunning wild nature, which serve as inspiration for many coin designs. Among the many coins minted by the mint each year are native species such as the koala series, the kookaburra series, the lunar series and, of course, the kangaroo.

Kangaroos are found in the wild only on the Australian continent. However, they can be seen in protected habitats, nature centers, and zoos in other parts of the world. Kangaroos are the largest known marsupials in the world. Although people outside Australia know them as a single species, there are four different species of kangaroos on the continent. The red kangaroo, which is named after its coat color, should be familiar to most people outside Australia. Other species include the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, the Western Grey Kangaroo, and the Antelope Kangaroo.

In Australia, the kangaroo is not only seen on the coins minted at the Perth Mint, but it is also a symbol of the nation. It is used in the Australian national coat of arms and as the official symbol of the Royal Australian Air Force. At the last count, it was found that there are about 34 million kangaroos living on the Australian continent.

Australian Gold Kangaroos Mint Security Cards

One of the newest ways to acquire the Australian Gold Kangaroo coin series is only available in 1 oz gold weight. These purchases use the most modern and safest packaging in the world. The Australian gold kangaroo coin is housed in a MintID package and contains a 128-bit encrypted microchip. Each coin has its own microchip. If the microchip is tampered with, it does not work and displays a manipulated result in the MintID system. This NFC microchip links the recipient to a unique, cloud-based authentication profile for each coin. All you have to do is scan the NFC microchip with your smartphone via the MintID app. You will also not be asked for any sensitive information or financial details to use the MintID app. This allows you to verify your purchases quickly and easily.

The sizes of the Australian Nugget gold coins

On April 23, 1987, the Australian Nugget gold coins in sizes 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz were officially released by Australian Prime Minister R.J. Hawke in Sydney. From 1987 to 1989, these 4 sizes (each representing a different coin) were produced as the famous Australian nugget (an international gold symbol). In 1990, the coins were still called the Australian Nugget, but the motif on the reverse was changed to depict a kangaroo (as an international symbol of Australia and its wildlife). Since then, the coin has been minted with the kangaroo motif every year. Introduced in 1990, the 1/20 ounce bullion coin was produced until 2009, after which it was discontinued. In 2008, the name on the coins was changed to Australian Kangaroo.
