American Buffalo Gold Coins

American Eagle Goldmünze

One of the most significant gold coins produced by the United States Mint is the American Gold Eagle coin. The American Gold Eagle, the country’s official gold coin, was introduced after the passage of the Gold Bullion Coins Act of 1985. The first American Eagle gold coin was issued on October 20, 1986. American Eagle gold coins are backed by the U.S. government and have a face value in U.S. dollars. However, their face value is symbolic. The face values of the American Eagle gold coins are as follows:

  • 1 oz American Eagle gold coin: $50
  • 1/2 oz American Eagle gold coin: $25
  • 1/4 oz American Eagle Gold Coin: $10
  • 1/10 oz American Eagle Gold Coin: $5

The American Eagle gold coins contain a total of four weights, the American Eagle 1 Oz 1, 1/2 ounce Gold American Eagle as well as the 1/4 ounce Gold American Eagle and the 1/10 Oz American Eagle. In addition, the American Eagle coin is minted in gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

The design of the American Gold Eagle coins

The American Eagle coins are alloyed with silver and copper to make them wear-resistant. They contain 22 carat gold with 91.67 percent gold content. For the coins, the face value is given in US dollars.

Front:

The obverse of the American Gold Eagle coin depicts the traditional American symbol of freedom “Lady Liberty”, surrounded by 50 stars representing the 50 states of the USA. In her right hand she holds a torch, in her left an olive branch. Her left foot rests on a rock, and near her right foot is a depiction of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. (where the U.S. Congress is located). The design of the Lady Liberty is based on a drawing by August Saint-Gauden for the $20 Double Eagle gold coin issued between 1907 and 1932. The design was modified by Matthew Peleoso for the American Gold Eagle coin.

Back

The reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin depicted a family of eagles until 2021. The male eagle, which carries an olive branch in its beak, flies over a nest where a female eagle and two eagle cubs live. Designed by Miley Busiek. Carved by Sherl Winter. It also bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The weight and face value of the American Eagle are also indicated on the front. As of 2021, the obverse has been changed and redesigned into a single eagle’s head, and new productions are based on this portrait.

Since the American Eagle gold coin is also a popular collector’s item, the West Point Mint also produces a proof version that bears the mint’s “W” under the date.

Background information about the American Eagle gold coin

The United States Mint is owned by the United States government and reports to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Mint is responsible for the minting and worldwide sale, distribution and marketing of the gold bullion coins American Gold Eagle and American Buffalo Gold. The American Eagle gold coin and the American Buffalo Coin are minted at the West Point Mint (in the state of New York), about 95 km north of New York City. The headquarters of the United States Mint is located in Washington (DC). The West Point Mint produces gold coins, silver coins, and platinum coins, as well as other numismatic coins. As a major producer of precious metal bullion coins, the United States Mint introduced the Gold American Eagle and the American Silver Eagle in 1986, the American Platinum Eagle in 1997 and the American Buffalo Gold in 2006.

Over the past 200 years, the U.S. Mint has produced more than 350 million gold coins. The first American Eagle gold coin, minted in 1795, was the $5 Half Eagle (gold grade 0.26 ounces, purity 91.67%). The most popular American Eagle gold coin was the $20 Double Eagle (gold content 0.97 oz, purity 91.6.7%). Over the course of 82 years (1850 – 1932), more than 170 million were spent. On the other hand, no gold coins were minted between 1933 and 1983, i.e. for 50 years.

American Gold Eagle Features

With a gold purity of 91.67% (22 carats), the American Eagle is available in 4 sizes: 1 ounce American Eagle, 1/2 ounce American Eagle, 1/4 ounce American Eagle and 1/10 ounce American Eagle. Since its inception, the coin design has remained unchanged except for one small change. Between 1986 and 1991, the year of minting was indicated on the obverse in Roman numerals (example: 1986 “MCMLXXXVI”). Since 1992, the year has been given in standard digits (example: “1992”).

Dates with Latin numerals

In American Eagle coin from the years 1986-1991, the date of the year is recorded in Roman numerals as follows:

1986

MCMLXXXVI

1989

MCMLXXXIX

1987

MCMLXXXVII

1990

MCMLXC

1988

MCMLXXXVIII

1991

One of the few rules for the production of gold coins is that the gold bullion coins American Gold Eagle and American Buffalo Gold must be produced exclusively in the USA mined gold.

Each coin size has a face value in U.S. dollars:

The American Eagle Gold bullion coins are robust and durable. They are alloyed with a small amount of silver. This hardens the coins and makes them resistant to scratches and nicks. The purity of gold is 91.67% (22 carats), alloyed with copper (5.33%) and silver (3%). Due to this alloy, the coins are slightly heavier than coins made of pure gold with a purity of .9999 and 24 carats. However, in terms of durability, they are certainly more resistant to abrasion than .9999 fine gold coins. The conventional fineness of the gold coins in circulation is intended for use as a means of payment. The first gold coin of the United States Mint, minted in 1795, also had this fineness. The concept of the American Eagle Gold bullion coins is basically aimed at gold investors.

2021 American Eagle Gold Proof Coin Version

The design of the American Eagle gold coins was changed in 2021. The 2021 American Gold Eagle coins were minted in a limited edition, the so-called “proof” version with the new design. This marked the first change in the design of the Gold Eagle in its 35-year history.

American Eagle Gold Proof coins are a limited and higher quality version of the regular American Eagle gold bullion coins. These “proof” versions have a shiny, reflective appearance. The term “proof” refers to a special minting process in which the coin blanks are pressed with special molds. This results in sharp images that inspire. They are available in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. In addition, the proof coins can be purchased individually or as a set with all four sizes. It should be noted that the American Eagle Gold Proof coins are minted in a limited edition. They bear the W mark of the West Point Mint.

How to recognize an American Eagle fake?

Would you like to invest in gold coins and silver coins, but have reservations about counterfeits? Your caution is not unjustified. However, we can show you some ways to calm down. The most important and effective of these ways is to minimize the risk you are exposed to. When you make your precious metals and gold coin investments with reliable, reputable dealers, you protect yourself from risks. Don’t buy from unknown or unreliable vendors without doing your research first. Easygold24 is aware of this and is always happy to assist its customers with its many years of experience in this area. Other ways to spot fake American Eagle include the following:

Optical features:

Another way to protect yourself from counterfeit American Eagle gold coins is through optical features. An unusual image on the coin, you can carefully compare. You are welcome to do this via our website. American Eagle fakes can usually be spotted with a keen eye for detail. On American Eagle fakes, both basic and small details may be missing. Especially with proof coins and circulating coins, Lady Liberty’s hair and dress should be clearly visible. Differences in visual appearance, especially in colors, can also be the first thing that catches the eye. In the case of a fake American Eagle gold coin, the colors may not match exactly and may be either too bright or too luminous.

Font:

In addition to the visual changes, there is another possibility, which manifests itself in changes to the font. Small changes in the font design can reveal an American Eagle fake. Some letters may appear very prominent and others faint. A close look can protect you.

Weight:

The weight of an American Eagle gold coin is a crucial factor in detecting a fake. Every coin produced by the US Mint has an exact weight, including the American Eagle. With an electronic digital scale, you can measure your coin to two decimal places in grams. Due to the cheaper metals used for the counterfeits, American Eagle counterfeits are unlikely to have the same weight as the real coins. However, make sure you use a high-quality digital scale and calibrate it correctly before each use.

Density/Diameter:

Like weight, diameter and thickness are crucial factors in determining an American Eagle fake. If you have a compass, a measuring instrument that allows you to determine the distance between two opposite sides of an object, you can easily determine the diameter and thickness of your coin. Here, too, coins are minted by the US Mint that meet the exact specifications. So if the diameter and/or thickness do not match, your American Eagle is a fake.

Technical Proof:

The most reliable detection is with XRF devices. This proof is carried out by reputable and registered gold buying and selling companies. We at easygold24 use the most modern equipment in our laboratory to analyze your precious metals. This is the only way we can ensure that we can give you the most accurate price for your precious metals. One of these instruments is the XRF spectrometer. This procedure is considered the most accurate. Using an XRF device, we determine the percentage of base metals and the percentage of other metals in the precious metals you send us. With the help of XRF technology, 72 elements, including gold, silver, platinum and palladium, as well as carat (333 (8K), 500 (12K), 585 (14K), 750 (18K), 916 (22K)) can be easily distinguished.

Above all, you should not have your American Eagle gold coin checked by unauthorized and unqualified persons. Incorrect test methods can cause irreversible damage.
