The Mexican Libertad Gold Coins - Libertad Gold

The gold coins of the Libertad series, produced by the Mexican Mint (Casa de Moneda de México), are inspired by the design of the 50 Mexican peso. The 50 peso was minted in 1921 as a symbol of the independence of the Mexican people, who had gained their freedom from Spanish colonization. It was awarded by the Mexican mint Casa de Moneda de México on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mexico. anniversary of national independence. When the Mexican Mint introduced the Libertad coins in gold and silver in 1981, the original Centenario motif (50 Mexican pesos) returned to Mexican coinage with the winged victory. Today, the Mexican Libertad gold coin is the standard gold bullion coin issued annually by the country. The Mexican Mint began production of the silver Libertad series in 1982.

The history of the Libertad Statue of Independence

As a symbol of independence, a column called the “Angel of Independence” was erected in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, at the intersection of Paseo de la Reforma and Calle Florencia. It depicts the Winged Victory, the work of the Italian sculptor Enrique Alciati. It is made of gold-plated bronze, is 6.7 meters high and weighs 7 tons. It is also placed on a 36-metre-high column. The statue holds a laurel wreath in one hand as a symbol of victory, and in the other hand a chain with broken links as a symbol of freedom.

Design and minting of the Libertad gold coin

As already mentioned, this extraordinarily beautiful gold coin made of .999 fine gold resembles the design of the famous 50 peso gold coin known as the Centenario. The artwork on the Mexican Libertad gold coin is both strikingly beautiful and important to Mexican history.

Front:

The obverse depicts the Angel of Independence. He stands at the top of the Victory Column of Mexican Independence, holding a wreath crown in one hand and a broken chain in the other. In the background, the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl can be seen in relief. The obverse is surrounded by the seal of the Mexican Mint and inscriptions in Spanish indicating the weight, type and purity of the currency.

Back cover:

The reverse of the Libertad gold coin bears the Mexican coat of arms. It is surrounded by ten different eagle motifs, which are used as the national coat of arms. It depicts an eagle sitting on a cactus arm and fighting with a snake. Around the eagle is the inscription ”ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’, the inscription is surrounded by a laurel wreath. The name of the nation is written here in Spanish.

First issue of Mexican Libertad gold coins

The Mexican gold coins Libertad were introduced in 1981 by the mint Casa de Moneda de México in three different weight variants of 1 oz, 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz. The 1981 coins were modelled on the South African Krugerrand gold coin (1967) and the Maple Leaf gold coin (1979). As the third coin of modern times, the Mexican Libertad coin has an important historical background. The Libertad gold coins, minted in 1981, had a gold content of .900. From 1991 this was increased to .999 fine gold. In addition to the three existing weights, the Casa de Moneda de México added the weights of 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce in 1991.

Minting of Libertad gold coins

The Libertad gold coins were minted every year from 1991 to 1994 in all weight levels. However, between 1995 and 2000, production was discontinued. From the year 2002, production was resumed in all weight classes and continues to this day.

The highest edition of the Libertad Gold collection was reached in 1981, the year of its first minting. The 1 ounce gold coin had a mintage of 596,000 pieces that year, the 1/2 ounce had a mintage of 193,000 pieces and the 1/4 ounce had a mintage of 313,000 pieces. Historically, the 1/20 ounce was the most minted coin after the 1 ounce. In recent years, the Libertad Mexicana has been minted in extremely small quantities compared to other bullion coins. This has not only increased demand for the Libertad, but has also led to higher premiums. In addition, the attractive design of the winged Statue of Independence is another reason for its popularity among collectors.

Features of Mexican Libertad silver coins

In addition to the production of gold coins, Libertad silver coins are also appreciated. The reason for this is that Mexico has long had an accumulation in silver production. Mexico produces one-fifth of the world’s amount of silver mined each year. The minting of silver coins is a practice that dates back to the 16th century in this country. This gives collectors the opportunity to add high-quality and unique products to their collections. Another added value for collectors is that the Mexican Mint is one of the few mints that can offer Mexican libertads made of silver, even in a weight of 1/20 ounce.
