The most famous of these coins is the 50 peso gold coin. The coin, called the Golden Centenario, was minted in 1921 by the Mexican Mint to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Mexico. Anniversary of the country’s independence from Spain. It shows the first version of the motif of the winged Victoria, which already adorned the Libertad bullion coins. The Centenario has a face value of 50 pesos, which is considered legal tender and was minted regularly from 1921 to 1931. During World War II, it was not issued for more than a decade due to an increase in demand for gold. There were coins from 1943 to 1947 and from 1949 to 1972 with new date stamps and the commemorative date stamp of 1947. Until the introduction of the Krugerrand gold coin in 1967, it was considered the purest gold coin of one ounce. So the Mexico peso has an important historical background.

History of the Mexican Mint: Casa de Moneda de México

“La Casa de Moneda de México”, commonly known as the Mexican Mint, is one of the oldest mints in the world. In 1521, when Spain colonized the Aztec Empire, the empire began to expand its territory to areas rich in silver and gold. The first step of this expansion was the decision to establish a mint in 1535. Expansion efforts included the Spanish territories of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands, the Bay Islands, Trinidad, and the Philippines.

As a result of this expansionist policy of Spain, the first old Mexican peso became the first coin minted by the Mexican mint Casa de Moneda de México. When Mexico became independent in 1821, the mint moved to San Luis Potosi.

Sizes and designs of the Mexico gold peso

Since many old Mexican coins were produced in different sizes, Mexican gold coins are available in a variety of variants.

50 gold pesos (centenario):

The original 50 peso gold coin was minted for sixteen years, from 1921 to 1947. The English translation of “centenario” means “centenary”. The size of the 50 Peso gold coin is perhaps the most interesting thing about this coin. The coin weighs 41.6 grams and is made of 90% pure gold. This corresponds to a weight of 37.5 grams of pure gold or 1.2057 troy ounces of real gold. On the face of the coin, the weight is inscribed with the inscription “37.5 Gr Oro Puro”. This is also indicated by the inscription. One of the reasons why these coins hold up so well or retain their original appearance is the 10% copper alloy inside. The diameter of the 50 gold peso is 37.00 mm.

  • Front: The obverse of the coin is modeled after the winged Roman god of victory. It was designed by Emilio del Moral. The Angel of Independence holds a bay leaf in his right hand and a torn chain in his left. In the background you can see the famous Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihautl. On both sides of the winged angel, 1821, the year of Mexico’s independence from Spain, is engraved. The coins were minted regularly from 1921 to 1931. Production resumed in 1943 to meet the increasing demand for gold coins. All coins in the collection issued from 1949 to 1972 usually bear the date 1947.
  • Back: The reverse of the 50 Peso gold coin depicts the Mexican coat of arms. It depicts an eagle sitting on a cactus and feeding on a snake. The inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” surrounds this effigy.
