Swiss Vreneli Gold Coins

Schweizer Vreneli Goldmünzen

Among the most popular minted gold coins, the Swiss Vreneli gold coins stand out in the category of historical bullion coins. These historic coins were first minted in 1897 by Swissmint. The Swiss Vreneli coin was minted in various sizes, including 10 francs, 20 francs and even 100 francs. However, the 20-franc coin is by far the most popular and widely used. In total, more than 60 million Vreneli gold coins were minted by the Swiss government.

The history of Swiss Vreneli gold coins

The Vreneli was first minted in 1897, just 50 years after the founding of the modern Swiss Confederation (Swissmint) on September 12, 1848. It is the most famous gold coin of the Swiss Confederation. In the years from 1897 to 1935, the produced Vreneli served as a means of payment. A total of 19,425,442 pieces were minted during this period, which corresponds to one third of the total production. In 1936, the economic crisis led to a cessation of monetary coinage.

From February 1945, even before the end of the Second World War, the minting of Vreneli gold coins was resumed. The gold coins of 20 francs were minted between February 1945 and April 1947. These coins were intentionally dated to 1935 and were denoted LB.

These restrikes were no longer used as a means of payment, but as a financial instrument and bullion coin. A total of 39,208,813 LB coins were minted. That was more than twice as many as in 1897-1935.

20 Swiss Francs Design

  • Front: The obverse of each Vreneli Gold coin depicts a female “Swiss beauty” with the Swiss Alps in the background. For this reason, the Vreneli coins are sometimes colloquially referred to as “Swiss Lady” coins. The bust bears the inscription “HELVETIA”. At the bottom right is the signature of F. LANDRY.
  • Back: The reverse of the coins depicts the shield of Switzerland with an oak wreath surrounding the shield. In the lower centre of the coin is the year of minting and the mint mark “B”. The two central parts of the coin are engraved with the face value of FR 20.

The design on the obverse and reverse is by the sculptor Professor Fritz-Ulysse Landry (1842-1927). All these beautiful golden Vreneli Helvetias were minted by Swissmint at the Federal Mint in Bern. They were minted between 1897 and 1936 and reissued in 1947 and 1949.

In 1925, the 100 franc Vreneli gold coin was minted in a limited series of 5000 pieces. It is considered the largest and most beautiful gold coin of the Swiss Confederation. This gold coin was not considered a means of payment, but a kind of special coin, which was presented by the Swiss Confederation as a gift of honor or as a diplomatic gift.
