British Mint - Shengxiào Collection: Lunar Series UK

With a history believed to date back more than 3,000 years, China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. With such a long history, it is not surprising that Chinese culture has a rich heritage and legendary folk culture. In 2014, the first official British Lunar Series UK coins were minted by the British Royal Mint to celebrate the Chinese zodiac signs. This very special series is called Shengxiào Collection, also known as Lunar Series UK or Lunar UK Series. The Lunar Series UK, with its distinctive motifs, was modeled after the Chinese lunar calendar, as were the Australian Lunar Series 1, Lunar Series 2 and Lunar Series 3. The Lunar series UK in silver and gold are produced in different weight classes. The unique Shengxiào collection is the first series of astrological moon coins from the Royal Mint. The first British coin in the series was issued in 2014 with the Chinese zodiac sign Horse. Every year a new coin is released in the UK, until the year 2025 of the Chinese zodiac Snake.

Design of the Lunar Series UK Shengxiào Coins

The British Chinese community is considered to be the oldest Chinese community in Western Europe, founded in the early 19th century. Therefore, the Royal Mint’s golden Lunar UK series were issued to commemorate Britain’s multicultural society and its special relationship with the Chinese nation and culture.

Each of the 12 coins in the Lunar UK series features a unique motif depicting an animal from the Chinese lunar calendar. Each of the motifs was designed by British-born Chinese artist Wuon-Gaen Ho, who was commissioned by the Royal Mint to design a dynamic collection of motifs reflecting the traditions of both Britain and China.

Front:

The obverse of the Great Britain coins depicts the bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing to the right and was designed by the official engravers of the Royal Mint. The 2014 and 2015 editions were designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, while the 2016 and later editions were designed by Jody Clark. From 2023, the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, will be depicted on every new coin of the Royal Mint.

Back cover:

On the back of the Lunar UK series, one of the animals of the Chinese lunar calendar is depicted. The eye-catching design for the reverse of the coin was created by Wuon-Gean Ho, an outstanding British artist of Chinese origin. Wuon-Gean Ho is an expert artist who used his knowledge of art history and veterinary medicine to depict each of the emblematic Chinese zodiac signs in a unique and very realistic way. The reverse is also engraved with the year of issue, fineness and weight of the coin.
