Queens Beasts Gold of the Royal Mint

Queens Beast Goldmünzen

One of the most exciting coin programs of the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom is the Queens Beasts Gold collection, which was first launched in 2016. While Britain’s sovereign coins and the Britannia collection are very successful as bullion coins, only The Queens Beat series is available in a selection of gold, silver and platinum with various weights in both bullion and proof variants.

The Queen’s Beasts Coin Series is a collection that delves deep into the background of British royal dynasties. It represents the kings and queens who ruled in the Kingdom of England hundreds of years ago. With a total of 10 motifs, it is an impressive series. The Queens Beasts series is inspired by the sculptural group of the British sculptor James Woodford.

Embossing of the golden Queens Beasts series

When the Queens Beasts Gold bullion and proof coins were introduced in 2016, their predecessor was in the Lion of England’s 10-coin collection. The Queens Beast, planned until 2021, will be minted and issued as a 2 ounce silver coin as well as 1/4 ounce and 1 ounce gold coins for investors. The platinum and silver options were expanded in 2017 to include a 1 ounce platinum coin and a 10 ounce silver coin.

As with many other Royal Mint bullion coin programs, there is no definitive minting limit for the Queens Beast Series. The Queen’s Beasts bullion coins will continue to be produced until there is investor demand. Although the minting figures for The Queens Beast Series were not released, there was still a lot of demand for each new issue.

The design of the Queens Beasts Gold

The gold, silver and platinum coins of the Queens Beast series all feature the same design elements on the front and reverse. When designing the series, it was no coincidence that the Royal Mint chose each of the 10 heraldic animals to be included in the collection. Ten statues were created to form a guard of honour at the entrance to Westminster Abbey at the Queen’s coronation on 2 June 1953. The Queens series refers to these characters who represent the British monarchy.

When Queen Elizabeth II entered the abbey to receive her crown, the door was guarded by 10 of the most important beasts in British dynasty history. Each of these statues was created by James Woodford RA. The modern designs on the Queens Beasts and other coins in the collection were created by Jody Clark, the engraver of the Royal Mint.

Queen’s series and England’s longest reigning monarch

All coins in the Queens Beasts Gold series feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in the right profile on the obverse. This fifth-generation design of Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 89 in 2015, was created by Jody Clark. But this is no ordinary design. This design aims to celebrate the fact that Elizabeth II, at the age of 89, has overtaken her great-grandmother Victoria I, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Jody Clark created this sculpture in right profile, making her the youngest engraver in the history of the Royal Mint to design a portrait of the Queen for a British mint.

The designs of The Queens Beast coins

The reverse of the Queens Series, consisting of 10 coins in gold, silver and platinum, has changed with each new issue. The ten intriguing pieces that represent the Queen’s heraldic ties are as follows:

The Lion of England:

The reverse of The Queen’s Beasts coin depicts a huge lion standing on its hind legs bearing the coat of arms of England. The lion is one of the oldest animals that appear on royal emblems. It is a traditional symbol of courage, strength and bravery. The lion is the first of a series of ten coins issued by the Royal Mint. This figure has been common in English heraldry since the early 12th century, when it was introduced by Richard I the Lionheart. Further engravings on this page provide information about the weight, purity, metal content and year of issue of the coin.

The Unicorn of Scotland:

One of the motifs of the Queens series is the unicorn. The unicorn is the national figure of Scotland. James VI of Scotland became James I of England after the union of the thrones with England. However, the origin of the unicorn lies in Celtic mythology, where it is considered a symbol of purity, innocence, but also of power.

The Red Dragon of Wales:

Another beast of the Queens Beasts series is the red dragon. He has been associated with Wales since the sixth century. King Henry VIII used the red dragon extensively on his ships, flags and shields.

The Black Bull of Clarence:

Clarence’s Black Bull is also one of the motifs for the Queens Beasts series. It is the symbol of power and strength and is associated with the rise of the House of York in the fifteenth century. The bull is one of the heraldic symbols. The Black Bull of Clarence is an indication of how determined Edward IV was to continue the royal line.

The Falcon of the Plantagenets:

The falcon, another motif of the Queens series, was a symbol associated with the House of York. The falcon sits on a gold chain, which is slightly open here to symbolize the interest of the Plantagenet king Edward IV in the English throne.

The Yale of Beaufort:

The Yale is another character in the Queens Beasts series with the features of an antelope or goat. She is the symbol of Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII.

The White Lion of Mortimer:

Unlike the Lion of England, this figure is without a crown. The Queens Series figure of the White Lion comes from the grandmother of Edward IV, the heir to the Mortimers. The shield in front of the lion is surrounded by a golden sun, which represents two different badges used by both King Edward IV and King Richard III.

The Wing Horse of Hanover:

Although the horse was only a relatively small part of George I’s royal coat of arms, it still deserved a place in the Queens series. George I became the first Hanoverian to rule England in 1714. The white horse appeared not only on all military uniforms of the time, but also on the royal badges.

The White Greyhound of Richmond:

Of course, the white greyhound should not be missing in the Queens Beasts series. He is associated with the honor of Richmond. The greyhound was first used in the reign of Edward 3.

The Griffin of Edward III:

The griffin is a hybrid symbol composed of parts of the eagle and the lion. When King Edward 3 of England ascended the throne, the griffin came with him. The griffin of Edward III stands for power and wisdom and for this reason is represented in the series Queens Beasts.

The Queens Beasts Completer, the final coin in the Queens Beast series, concludes a collection of 11 coins depicting all 10 animals depicted in the collection.
