American Buffalo Gold Coins
The American Buffalo Gold or Buffalo Gold Coin is a 24-carat bullion coin first issued by the U.S. Mint on June 24, 2006. Unlike previous American gold coins, which traditionally contained 22 carats (9167), the Buffalo gold coin has a fineness of 9999.
By law, all gold used to make the Buffalo Gold bullion coin must come from newly mined sources in the United States. With a gold purity of 99.99% (24 carats), the American Buffalo is produced in an edition of just 1 ounce each year. The coin was originally designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
Design of the Buffalo gold coin
The Buffalo Gold coin consists of the profile of an Indigenous and a Buffalo, representing the beauty of the “American West”.
Front:
The design of the Buffalo gold coin is a modified version of James Earle Fraser’s design for the popular American five-cent coin known as the “Indian Head” or “Buffalo Nickel”, which was minted from 1913 to 1938. The obverse shows the right profile of an American Indian, also known as “Native American” or “First Nations”. This is not a single individual, but a compilation of facial features taken from three real-life Native American leaders: Big Tree (Kiowa tribe), Iron Tail (Oglala Lakota tribe), and Two Months (Cheyenne tribe), which show the profile of a replica Native American of the indigenous population. In addition, the inscription “LIBERTY” and the year of issue can be seen on the obverse.
Back cover:
Depicts the silhouette of an American buffalo (also known as bison) on a mound of earth. It is believed that the bison was modeled after the “Black Diamond” of the New York Zoo. In addition, the reverse features the writings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “$50 1 OZ” as well as “.9999 FINE GOLD”.
