Perth Mint Lunar I Gold Coins

The Lunar Series 1 all-gold coins are reminiscent of the 12-year Chinese lunar calendar by depicting each symbol on the reverse of the coins. In Chinese culture, it is believed that each animal has a profound effect on those born in the “ruling” year, influencing the personality of people. Therefore, the Lunar Series 1 Gold is an excellent choice as a gift for special occasions. The first series of Australian Lunar gold coins produced by the Perth Mint began in 1996 with the “Year of the Rat” coin and ended in 2007 with the issuance of the “Year of the Pig” coin. Each gold coin is made of 0.999 fine gold. This design, which quickly gained popularity among investors and collectors, is available in gold and silver.

First issued in 1996, the Perth Mint’s flagship, the Lunar Series 1 Gold, had a humble beginning. It started as a limited gold bullion coin in four sizes with only a single numismatic issue.

Starting with the mouse in 1996, the Lunar Series 1 continued completely gold and expanded to a wider range of formats each year. In 1999, the series was also minted in silver. By 2004, the series had grown to 36 different editions. The Lunar I gold series was produced in simpler designs than the silver series. The silver series, on the other hand, had a wide variety of different colored editions.

Even though it is difficult to find variants of the Lunar Series Gold, it remains an attractive and groundbreaking series that takes us to the Lunar Series 2.

Lunar Series 1 Gold Coins – The Lunar Calendar

The Chinese lunar calendar is the oldest chronological record in history, dating back to 2600 BC. It was created during the reign of the Chinese emperor Huang Ti. The zodiac that arose at that time is based on the movements of the moon. Like the Gregorian calendar we use, the Chinese lunar calendar is an annual calendar. Each year consists of a symbol that corresponds to the Chinese lunar calendar. Each figure has a very high quality relief. In the 12-year period, each symbol corresponds to an animal.

Lunar Series 1 Gold Designs

Front:

Since the first issue of the Lunar Coins series in 1996 (gold coins only), the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ralph Maklouf, has been used for three years. From 1999 onwards, all gold and silver coins featured the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank Broadley, in the centre of the coin. Around the portrait are the words “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and the face value of the coin.

Back cover:

On the reverse side of the Lunar Series 1 Gold, the first gold-colored Australian moon appeared in the mouse year 1996. Each year shows an animal motif corresponding to the lunar calendar. Above the weight and fineness, the corresponding zodiac sign of the Chinese lunar calendar is indicated.

The motifs that are minted each year in the Australian Gold Lunar Series 1 Set are as follows with their respective year:

  • 1996 Lunar Gold Rat
  • 1997 Lunar Gold Ox
  • 1998 Lunar Gold Tiger
  • 1999 Lunar Gold Rabbit
  • 2000 Lunar Gold Dragon

In the 1996 Gold Lunar Series 1 Gold, the gold weight was introduced in 1 Oz Gold Lunar, 1/4 Gold Lunar, 1 10 Oz Gold Lunar and 1/20 oz Lunar Gold. In 2000, three large sizes were added: 2 ounces, 10 ounces and 1 kg of lunar gold. In 2004, the 1/2 ounce was added, and finally, in 2006, the massive size of 10 kg. All coins are minted with a purity of 99.99%.

The Lunar Series 1 Silver began in 1999 with sizes 1 kg, 10 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz and 1/2 oz. In 2004, the 1/2 kg and 5 oz versions were added. Since the silver series began in 1999, the figures printed in the first three years were not included in the silver series. Due to the demand of collectors, the Perth Mint found a solution. While the Mint minted new coins for the Lunar Series 2, it also continued to mint the Lunar Series 1 Gold. Therefore, there are no silver coins with the date 1996-1998. On the other hand, they are available with the date 2008-2010. This excellent addition provides silver collectors with a complete set, even if the coins were only minted in 1 kg, 2 ounce and 1 ounce sizes. All coins are 99.9% pure.

The numismatic series Lunar Coins

For the Lumar Series 1 all-gold, only three proofs were issued. A set of 1/4 ounce proof, a set of 1/10 ounce proof, and a set of 1 ounce proof were made. In contrast, it can be said that the silver series was mixed. There were 18 different proofs with different colors and different sizes.
