Ducats - Austrian gold coin

Dukaten - Österreichische Goldmünze

The word ducat comes from the medieval Latin ducatus, which means “belonging to a duke (or duchy)”. The historical gold coins, i.e. the coinages of this duke or duchy, were used in European trade from the Middle Ages to the First World War. The first gold ducat was introduced in the 12th century and became one of the most important currencies of the Austrian Empire. The engravings changed significantly during the Middle Ages.

One of the most common versions are the ducats gold coins. Over time, ducats were also minted in other European countries, including Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands. The gold ducats were made of high-purity fine gold and were therefore the gold coins with the highest fineness. Until the outbreak of World War I, Austria continued to mint gold ducats for circulation. Due to a shortage of metal during the war, the minting of gold ducats was discontinued in 1915.

Design of the gold ducats from Austria

All ducats were minted in almost pure gold of 23.75 carats or a purity of .9860. They were produced continuously from 1872 to 1915. The gold content of the 4 ducats minted before 1830 was .4438 troy ounces, while the coins minted from 1835 onwards had a gold content of .4430 troy ounces. The 1-ducat coins minted from 1598 to 1779, on the other hand, had a gold content of .1109 troy ounces and, with the exception of the years 1705 to 1779, were made from .1106 troy ounces of gold. After 1779, the official gold content of 1 ducat was set at .1106 troy ounces.

Front

The obverse of the Ducat gold coin depicts a portrait of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, born in 1848 and died in 1916. In the last edition of 1916, the emperor is turned to the right and depicted with a beard and a thick mustache. Next to the laurel wreath on the head of Joseph I, the inscription reads “FRANC IOS I D G AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR”.

Back

The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the House of Habsburg. The Habsburgs were the continuation of the Holy Roman Empire from 1438 to 1740. The double-headed eagle or imperial eagle was a symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, the imperial eagle was replaced by the crown of Austria. The imperial eagle holds the emperor’s sword, which is used in coronation ceremonies, and the orb, a symbol of divine law. The inscription “HUNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A” surrounds the coat of arms.

Distinctive features of ducats

The denominations of the ducats were printed as 1 ducats and 4 ducats.

Why invest in ducat gold coins?

The ducat gold coins are a contribution to the historical heritage of Europe. The design of the Austrian gold ducat coins is based on the medieval gold coins of Europe. The Austrian ducat coins bear the legacy of more than 800 years of Austrian coinage up to the present day.

The Ducat gold coin is the perfect opportunity to invest in a piece of history and at the same time in an exceptionally pure gold bar. The following should be remembered: the minting of ducats continued after 1915. The years on all coins minted after this date are given as 1915 in honor of the emperor. You should therefore be aware that these newly minted ducats (even if the date is deliberately written in 1915) are not worth much numismatically. Today, the Austrian Mint is responsible for the excellent restrikes of the ducat gold coins.
