China Panda Gold Coins

China Panda Goldmünze

The history of China Panda gold coins

One of the best-selling gold coins in the world is the China Panda. First issued by the China Mint in 1982, the Panda gold coin is a versatile collection that also includes coins weighing 1 oz/30 g and coins weighing fractions of the weight. Every year, a new design is introduced with the panda on the back. They are very popular with both collectors and investors.

As already mentioned, Panda gold coins were first produced by the China Mint in 1982. In the same year, the mint offered the China Panda coins in the weight classes 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. Each coin had a pure gold content of .999.

The China Mint focused on providing investors and collectors with something worth buying by adding a new panda image to the China Panda gold coins every year. Only in 2002 was the Chinese Mint unable to introduce a new design. As a result of the protests of loyal investors, the China Mint changed its mind and in 2003 again accommodated investors with a new motive.

Design of China Panda gold coins

Although there is no name on the coins, the precious coins are known as “pandas” because the reverse depicts a giant panda, a national symbol of China.

Front:

The obverse of the China Panda gold coin features the same design element every year since 1982. It depicts the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) is located in a large park (273 hectares) in Beijing. The Temple of Heaven is the hall of prayer for a good harvest. Its origin dates back to the Ming Dynasty (until 1420). The Chinese emperors came to Tiantan every year in January (beginning of spring) to pray for a bountiful harvest and national prosperity. The year of minting of the Chinese golden panda is also on this page. In addition, the inscription “Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo” is engraved in Chinese, which translates into English as “People’s Republic of China”. The design of the front has remained unchanged from 1982 to 1991. Since 1992, however, the motif of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing has been enclosed by an inner circle.

Back cover:

On the reverse of the China Panda gold coin, a new scene is depicted every year. This is the side of the coin that gives the collection its name. This side of the coin depicts the giant panda, a species of bear native to the central highlands of China. The panda is easily recognizable among other bear species by its black and white fur and black spots, especially to the eyes. The reference to Chinese gold content was removed in 1992. Since then, the note has only been written in English.

The coin history of the China Panda gold coin is probably the most varied. These changes affected the design as well as the denominations and weights. The China Panda was introduced in four weight classes in 1982, and the fifth, the 1/20 oz one, was produced in 1983. China was the pioneer in the world’s smallest gold coins. The first 1/20 ounce gold bullion coin was issued in 1983. The 1 gram coin was minted in 1991.

Since then, the China Mint has produced these five coins every year. From 1982 to 2000, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins were minted with the following denominations.

  • 1 ounce – 100 yuan
  • 1/2 ounce – 50 yuan
  • 1/4 ounce – 25 yuan
  • 1/10 ounce – 10 yuan
  • 1/20 ounce – 5 yuan

From 2001 to 2016, the Chinese Mint minted coins with the following denominations:

  • 1 oz – 500 yuan
  • 1/2 oz – 200 Yuan
  • 1/4 oz – 100 Yuan
  • 1/10 oz – 50 Yuan
  • 1/20 oz – 20 Yuan

In 2016, the China Mint also made changes to the weight specifications. It also made another important change to the China Panda by removing the “Troy Ounce” unit of measurement from the coin. Instead, the weight of all China Panda gold coins minted after 2016 is given in grams. The Chinese Mint said this was done in order to achieve harmonization with the country’s metric system. The weights have been amended as follows:

  • 1 oz – 30 grams
  • 1/2 ounce – 15 grams
  • 1/4 ounce – 8 grams
  • 1/10 oz – 3 grams
  • 1/20 oz – 1 gram

Finally, the diameter of the coins also changed slightly with the introduction of the gram. Only the 1/2 ounce coin retained its diameter of 27.00 mm, the 1 ounce and 1/20 ounce coins decreased slightly from their original diameter, while the 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce coins increased slightly.

History of the China Mint

China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) is responsible for the design, worldwide sale and marketing of Chinese precious metal coins. This also includes the Gold Panda bullion coins. Since 2005, all China Panda gold coins have been produced at the Shenzhen Guobao Mint, which is owned by the CGCI. The Shenzhen site near Hong Kong is located 1,800 kilometers south of Beijing. In the period between 1948 and 1978, no metal ingots or coins were produced in China for 30 years. However, over the past 40 years, China has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of precious metal coins. More than 1,700 different coins in gold, silver, platinum and palladium were produced in numerous designs and sizes. The goal of the precious metal coin program was to promote Chinese culture worldwide. In 1982, the China Panda gold coin was named “Coin of the Year” by the American Numismatic Association (ANA).

Why do the Panda gold coins have such a special appeal for collectors?

The China Panda gold coins are mainly issued by the China Mint as a bullion coin for gold bars. However, in 1986, the China Mint offered Golden Panda proof sets for collectors. This program ran from 1986 to 1992 and is marked with a round “P” on the reverse of the coin. In addition, the Chinese mint Panda produced gold coins weighing 5 oz and 12 oz. However, their number is small. In 1997, the first year of issuance of the 1 kilogram China Panda gold coin, only 58 pieces were produced in total.
